This Day Last Year

Train cross-country.
The chivalry of my journey was un-ladylike.

Club car, Mardi Gras-
a New Orleans
suitcase full of beads,
little bottles of Jack.

Leg up on the bathroom sink
where a boy would die next week,
and I would explain it to an old Quaker couple
over French toast.

Wide-eyed Kansas melts on the body bag.
